February 20, 2026 – The Grand Isle Volunteer Fire Department marked the successful completion of Day 1 of an intensive ice rescue certification course conducted by Lifesaving Resources LLC. A total of 32 participants from across Vermont and Canada gathered for the specialized weekend training, focused on strengthening lifesaving capabilities in cold-water and ice emergency situations.
The course combines classroom instruction with hands-on skill development, equipping firefighters and emergency responders with advanced techniques to safely conduct rescues on unstable ice surfaces.
Organizers emphasized the importance of preparedness during the winter season, when frozen waterways present significant risks to communities. The second day of training will move outdoors, where participants will apply their newly acquired knowledge during practical exercises on the ice and in the water, further reinforcing their readiness to respond effectively in real-world emergencies.
