WILLIMANTIC, CT - At 7:34 A.M. on Monday, February 20th, the Willimantic Fire Department was dispatched to 93 Quercus Avenue for a possible house fire. While crews were responding, WW Dispatch said they were upgrading to the first alarm because they were still on the phone with the caller, who said the smoke was getting worse.
Engine 101 arrived at 7:38 A.M. with smoke showing from a two-and-a-half story wood-frame and transmitted the working fire. Engine 101's crew stretched a one-and-three-quarter inch hose line through the front door and extinguished a kitchen fire. Luckily, the hydrant was in the front yard so the water supply was quickly established.
Truck 101 positioned in the front and provided horizontal ventilation. While operating, crews found the fire had dropped down to the basement, so they forced the bulkhead and knocked the rest of the fire. Mansfield Squad 207 performed the secondary search and overhaul.
UConn and Columbia provided the FASTs. Scotland Ambulance 516 staged on scene. North Windham ET-102 and South Windham Rescue 104 provided manpower and support. Windham Center provided coverage and the Windham Fire Marshal's Office is investigating.
