Multi-Agency Search Ends in Fatality at Secret Lake

Winsted, Conn. On Wednesday evening, September 16, 2026, emergency responders were dispatched to Secret Lake in the Algonquin State Forest following a report that someone had gone underwater and failed to resurface.
The incident was reported around 7:10 p.m. on September 16 The lake is situated in the Winsted area of Winchester, Connecticut, inside Algonquin State Forest. Connecticut DEEP confirmed that its Environmental Conservation Police were dispatched to a report of someone in the water around 7:30 p.m.
The first emergency response involved the Winsted Fire Department and Winchester Fire Department, as well as police and EMS staff. Winsted firefighters entered the water in immersion suits, while Winchester firefighters launched a boat to aid in the search.
