January 20, 2026 – As frigid temperatures settle into the region, the City of Rutland Fire Department announced that the Rutland Free Library will serve as an overnight extreme cold-weather shelter when activated by the State of Vermont. The shelter, located at 10 Court Street, will only open when temperatures reach minus 10 degrees Fahrenheit, including wind chill, and only when officially activated by the state. Residents must call 211 to confirm whether the shelter is open. Guests will be required to sign in at 6:30 p.m. and depart by 7:30 a.m. Cots and bedding will be provided, and guests will not be permitted to return if they leave during overnight hours. Officials also noted that pets, weapons, and substance use will not be allowed inside the shelter. Community members are encouraged to share this information with anyone who may need assistance during extreme cold conditions.
