February 7, 2026 — The Charleston Volunteer Fire Department is reminding residents about the serious and rapidly escalating dangers associated with lithium-ion battery fires. Officials noted that incidents involving these batteries can go from normal conditions to full-blown chaos in a matter of seconds. When lithium-ion batteries ignite, they can cause rapidly changing fire behavior, intense heat release, and an almost immediate reduction in visibility due to thick, toxic smoke. Firefighters emphasize that these fires are particularly hazardous because of how quickly they develop and the challenges they present during suppression efforts. The department encourages the public to use only approved charging equipment, avoid overcharging devices, and properly dispose of damaged or recalled batteries to reduce the risk of fire.
