February 9, 2026 — The Edgartown Fire Department conducted an ice rescue drill on Saturday to reinforce critical lifesaving skills as winter conditions continue to create hazardous ice surfaces around local waterways. Firefighters trained in cold-water rescue techniques designed to assist individuals or pets who may fall through unstable ice. With Edgartown surrounded by coastal and inland waters, officials emphasized the importance of preparedness during the winter months. Department members practiced coordinated rescue operations using specialized cold-water suits, safety lines, and hand tools to simulate real-life emergency scenarios. Fire officials reminded the public that ice conditions can change rapidly and may not be strong enough to support a person’s weight, even when it appears solid. Residents are strongly advised to avoid walking on frozen waterways and to call 911 immediately in the event of an emergency.
