Assistant Chief Mike Griffis Retires After 27 Years in Binghamton

Binghamton, NY — January 15th — The Binghamton Fire Department announced the retirement of Assistant Chief Mike Griffis after more than 27 years of service to the city of Binghamton. Chief Griffis joined the department on March 9, 1998, and rose through the ranks, becoming lieutenant, captain, and assistant chief. He was temporarily promoted deputy chief in April 2023 before returning to the assistant chief position, where he finished his career.

Chief Griffis retired on January 13, 2026. Throughout his career, he was known for emphasizing training, readiness, and discipline. According to department officials, his leadership influenced firefighters and officers from multiple generations. The department congratulated him for his service and wished him the best in retirement.
