South Deerfield, MA — February 5th — The South Deerfield Fire Department arrived to Locust Street for reports of black smoke coming from a building. Upon arrival, personnel confirmed a fighting fire and completed the proper assignment. Fire was discovered in the basement and had spread to the first story. Firefighters used multiple handlines to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading. Mutual-aid organizations from outlying areas responded on the site and covered other simultaneous situations in the city. The fire was brought under control, and the Massachusetts State Police Fire Marshal is investigating the event. Earlier in the day, South Deerfield Rescue 1 responded to Northampton as a Rapid Intervention Team on a separate working fire call.
