PATERSON, NJ - A two-alarm fire apparently sparked by utility work in the street in front of the building caused extensive damage to a large frame dwelling on February 1st.

Fire units were dispatched to 515 Broadway at about 1:45 P.M. Paterson firefighters arrived and saw a smoke condition issuing from the first-floor of a large two-and-a-half-story frame dwelling, and utility work being done in the street in front of the home. The fire appeared to be in the basement. The smoke condition intensified and flames soon vented from several first-floor front windows. Command transmitted a second-alarm. The visible flames were soon knocked down, but smoke was showing from all floors. Ladder 3 put its stick to the roof and two vent holes were cut.

Utility companies were requested on a rush as the work being done in the street became a serious possible cause. Companies stretched multiple lines to all floors and opened up, knocking down the fire traveling in the walls. The fire was able to be placed under control in about one hour. No serious injuries were reported.
