The Wood-Ridge Fire Department was called to the Hilton Hotel at approximately 5:30 a.m. on January 9th due to an active fire alarm. Elevated carbon monoxide readings were observed throughout the facility by first-arriving units. The hotel was evacuated and ventilation activities were started as a result of the readings. To help with air movement, a second alarm and the Bergen County Fan Unit were asked. As firefighters readied themselves for a protracted crisis, firehouse coverage was also organized.
When PSE&G arrived on the scene, they discovered that a broken boiler in the basement was the source of the carbon monoxide. For around three hours, firefighters were on the site. Together with many mutual aid departments that supported both on-scene operations and firehouse coverage, Chief Meglio, Chief Cribben, Engine 901, and Truck 904 provided assistance.
