Hydrant Access Urged as Winter Storms Approach Dumont

Jan. 22, 2026 The Dumont Volunteer Fire Department is reminding residents to do their part to keep the community safe during winter weather by ensuring fire hydrants are clear of snow and ice. As significant snowfall is possible, firefighters stress that immediate access to hydrants is essential during emergencies. Fire apparatus carry a limited onboard water supply, making hydrants a critical resource for sustained firefighting operations. Any delay caused by buried or obstructed hydrants can result in valuable time lost while crews work to establish a water supply. In addition, maintaining a clear working area around hydrants helps prevent hose kinks that can restrict water flow and hinder firefighting efforts. Residents are encouraged to clear snow and ice from hydrants located on or near their property, maintain an open perimeter of approximately three feet, and ensure a clear path from the hydrant to the street.
