January 19, 2026 — The Grand Isle Volunteer Fire Department announced Firefighter Matthew Emmons as its 2025 Firefighter of the Year during the department’s annual dinner, recognizing his exceptional dedication, leadership, and service to both the department and the community. Emmons has served the department across several periods, consistently demonstrating pride in the job and a commitment to excellence, from staying after calls to clean and restock apparatus, spending long hours maintaining gear, assisting with apparatus transport and maintenance, and ensuring vehicles are ready for the next response. Over the past year, he played a key role mentoring six probationary members by meeting ahead of trainings, hosting additional weekend sessions, and providing steady guidance. His service extended beyond the fireground through involvement in community events, preparation of hundreds of fire prevention bags, and even lending his personal truck to keep the department’s boat operational while the brush truck was out of service. Department leadership praised Emmons for his tireless work ethic, positive attitude, and unwavering support, noting the award as a reflection of his lasting impact on Grand Isle Fire and the community it serves.
