December 29, 2025 — As 2025 came to a close, the Grand Isle Volunteer Fire Department marked another record-setting year for emergency responses, highlighting the wide range of calls handled by local firefighters. Among the more unusual incidents was a call involving an angry feral cat trapped under a resident’s bed. The homeowner had been caring for the feral cat for several years and recently brought it indoors after surgery, intending to release it once recovered. When the cat escaped its cage and hid under a bed, repeated attempts to safely remove it were unsuccessful. After nearly two hours, the fire department was called. Chief White, Captain Hemingway, and Firefighter Emmons responded and used a Ketch-All animal rescue tool to safely secure the cat. The animal was returned outdoors without injury and has since resumed roaming the neighborhood, underscoring the department’s commitment to helping the community in all types of emergencies—expected and unexpected alike.
