Salem, NH — 3rd January — In response to a reported horse rescue, the Salem Fire Department, located at 152 Main St. in Salem, New Hampshire, offered mutual help to the Sandown Fire Department. To assist with the operation, firefighters from Battalion 2 Staffing Squad 1 were sent in.

For almost two hours, crews worked at the scene, closely collaborating with Sandown staff and using specialized large animal rescue tactics. The horse did not survive despite the responders' persistent efforts. The owner received condolences from fire officials. In order to ensure responder safety, large animal rescues are not typical calls and call for extra preparation, tools, and coordination. The event brought to light regional collaboration and the function of mutual aid in supplying skilled resources for unusual and complicated emergency circumstances.
