The Attleboro Fire Department is warning locals that ice conditions on ponds and lakes are getting more dangerous as warmer temperatures are predicted. Officials emphasise that no ice is ever totally safe and that even seemingly solid ice can swiftly weaken as temperatures rise. Numerous elements, such as water depth, currents, snow cover, ice age, and recent temperature changes, can influence ice strength. It might be risky to judge ice safety only based on appearance because these conditions are not always apparent. The department advises locals to avoid crises before they arise because falling through ice might result in fatalities or severe injuries. The safest place to skate is still on designated ice rinks.

Residents are advised to wear a life jacket for insulation and flotation, carry a charged mobile phone, bring ice picks and rope, and notify someone of their plans before approaching or entering ice. If someone goes through the ice, they should remain composed, wear winter gear, face the direction they came from, and try to pull themselves out while dispersing their weight once they are on the surface. When witnessing an ice emergency, residents are reminded to follow “Preach, Reach, Throw, Go,” calling 911 first and avoiding self-rescue attempts if conditions are unsafe. Pet owners are also cautioned not to attempt rescues if an animal falls through the ice. As temperatures continue to rise, the Attleboro Fire Department urges the public to use extreme caution to protect themselves, their families, and first responders.
