On the evening of December 22, 2025, the Vergennes Fire Department (VFD) held an engaging and educational training session featuring guest instructor Peter Coffey of the Bristol Fire Department. The training blended department history with modern fireground decision-making, offering members a unique perspective on how the service has evolved—and how those lessons apply today.
Coffey began the evening by sharing stories from the history of the Vergennes Fire Department, highlighting how equipment, tactics, and fire operations have changed over the past 50 years. His presentation connected past experiences with present-day challenges, reinforcing the importance of understanding where the fire service has been in order to better prepare for where it is going.
Following the discussion, members transitioned into a hands-on practical exercise. Firefighters were divided into three crews, each assigned a different fire call scenario. From an officer and incident commander perspective, crews built a detailed timeline of events, working through dispatch information, initial size-up, mutual aid considerations, and overall fireground operations.
The exercise challenged members to sharpen decision-making, critical thinking, and innovative problem-solving skills, providing valuable takeaways for firefighters at every level within the department. These scenario-based discussions reinforced the importance of leadership, communication, and adaptability on the fireground.
VFD extends its sincere thanks to Peter Coffey for sharing his time, experience, and knowledge. Training nights like this strengthen the department and enhance its ability to serve the community safely and effectively.
