On the evening of December 8, 2025, the City of Vergennes Fire Department (VFD) was dispatched at 7:26 p.m. to provide engine coverage in the Town of Charlotte during an active structure fire. Within minutes of the initial dispatch, Command 1 and the Engine were en route and quickly upgraded to respond directly to the fire scene due to the scale and progression of the incident.
Upon arrival, VFD crews integrated seamlessly with multiple mutual-aid departments already operating under challenging conditions. Heavy snowfall, cold temperatures, and limited visibility created a demanding environment for firefighters working extended operational periods. Despite the weather, crews rotated through several critical assignments as the incident evolved.
Command 1 was tasked with water supply operations, establishing and maintaining a reliable supply through tanker shuttle operations. This effort proved essential in supporting sustained fire suppression activities at the scene. VFD firefighters also assisted with suppression and support roles alongside partner agencies, ensuring operations continued safely and efficiently throughout the incident.
The coordinated response highlighted the strength of inter-agency cooperation and preparedness. Firefighters from across the region worked together under difficult conditions to control the fire, protect surrounding properties, and maintain responder safety.
VFD extends its appreciation to all responding agencies and dispatchers for their professionalism and teamwork during this incident. Calls like this reinforce the importance of regional cooperation, training, and readiness—especially during severe winter weather.
