The City of Vergennes Fire Department responded Monday evening, December 1, 2025, to a reported chimney fire at a residence in the city, with crews acting quickly to assess conditions and ensure the home was safe.
The call was dispatched at 8:13 p.m. Chief 1 arrived within minutes and reported no visible flames coming from the chimney. However, firefighters observed clear signs of elevated heat at the chimney cap when viewed from the ground, prompting a full response and thorough investigation.
Vergennes Fire Department units responded with the Tower, Engine, and Tanker. Firefighters split into coordinated interior and exterior operations. Interior crews worked inside the home to clean out the fireplace and check for any extension into surrounding walls or structural components. At the same time, roof crews accessed the chimney using the tower ladder to evaluate conditions from above.
After a complete assessment, crews confirmed there was no active fire and no obstruction within the chimney. With all hazards mitigated and the residence deemed safe, units were able to clear the scene without incident.
Fire officials remind residents that regular chimney maintenance is critical, especially during the heating season. Annual chimney cleanings and inspections can help prevent dangerous creosote buildup and reduce the risk of chimney fires.
