ROSELLE PARK, NJ - A raging fire broke out at a construction and flooring materials warehouse in Roselle Park on January 1st.
Companies arrived after being dispatched to a smell of smoke in the area just before 5 p.m. and discovered a fire at Crossfield Products, located at 140 Valley Road. A quick second alarm was struck, followed by greater alarms thereafter, which would eventually escalate to a sixth alarm. The fire extended to an exposure building, a commercial occupancy on the Bravo side, but that fire was quickly knocked down.
Heavy fire took possession of the building as numerous outside lines and master streams went into operation. Due to the numerous chemicals involved, the Union County Haz Mat team was brought in. As the fire consumed the building, a severe ember condition over the neighborhood had firefighters on brand patrol to ensure no roofs of homes or other buildings were on fire. The roof eventually collapsed, causing the outer walls to crack and become compromised. A severe icy condition formed on the fireground as temperatures were in the low 20s.
“Several explosions occurred in the beginning from propane tanks, resins, oils, and other chemicals,” Roselle Park Mayor Joseph Signorello, Jr. said.
The mayor also stated that firefighters could not immediately enter the burning building due to the danger posed by the chemicals and fire conditions. He said a transformer blew, causing about 500 customers to lose power. Fire officials reported no injuries.
