Fall River, MA — October 8 — While Ladder 4's primary fire apparatus was undergoing repairs due to mechanical failures, its crew conducted training exercises on a temporary substitute vehicle.

While operating a borrowed reserve ladder truck supplied by the manufacturer of the city's upcoming Ladder 4, the crew found themselves utilizing an unfamiliar vehicle approximately one year prior to the official delivery of the new apparatus, thereby conducting emergency response preparations with equipment that remained untested and foreign to their routine operations.

Throughout the training session, firefighters conducted a comprehensive review of the reserve truck's instrumentation, control mechanisms, and operational protocols.

This thorough familiarization enabled personnel to gain a definitive understanding of the apparatus, thereby ensuring its safe and effective deployment during emergency operations.

Proficiency with a replacement vehicle is imperative, as apparatus often vary significantly in layout, operational protocols, and equipment positioning. Personnel must be fully acquainted with the specific location of tools and the functionality of the truck's systems prior to dispatching on any emergency call.

Concerns regarding the antiquated state of fire apparatus and protracted delivery schedules have also garnered significant attention, specifically highlighting the equipment requirements of Fall River. A recent report from the city's public safety committee revealed that the acquisition of a new ladder truck had been postponed due to manufacturer delays, necessitating the temporary deployment of a loaner unit during this interim period.

The October 8 training exercise underscored the department's sustained commitment to operational readiness as crews acclimated to evolving equipment configurations and anticipated the arrival of Ladder 4.
