New Bedford, MA — November 1 — At approximately 5:41 p.m.on Sunday, New Bedford Fire Department units were dispatched to address a basement fire within a three-family residential structure located at 491 North Front Street.

Upon arrival, firefighters observed smoke billowing from the basement; however, as Engine 8 was already engaged in a separate emergency, Engine 9 assumed the role of the first-due unit. The crew rapidly deployed a hose line into the subterranean level, where they identified the blaze originating from a clothes dryer.

Acting with swift efficiency, the fire suppression team quelled the blaze before it could propagate into the adjacent structure.

Having permeated the entire edifice, the smoke necessitated a series of ventilation maneuvers and rigorous atmospheric monitoring to ensure safety protocols were met prior to the re-entry of residents.

No injuries were sustained, and all residents were able to reoccupy their residences shortly thereafter. The timely activation of working smoke alarms facilitated a prompt response by the occupants to the fire.

In a recent advisory, the department urged residents to diligently clean dryer lint traps and to scrutinize exhaust vents for accumulations of lint or other obstructions, measures essential for mitigating the risk of dryer-related fires. Firefighting officials further emphasize adherence to the manufacturer's prescribed maintenance protocols and the imperative to maintain a clear perimeter surrounding the appliance.

The response underscored the critical necessity of preserving unit availability during simultaneous emergencies, exemplified by Engine 9 accepting the first-due assignment while Engine 8 simultaneously managed a separate incident.
