Hewlett, N.Y. — October 19 — Representatives from the Hewlett Fire Department convened at Hewlett Elementary School to deliver an instructional session on fire safety and prevention to the second-grade cohort. This engagement afforded the students a practical opportunity to reinforce their understanding of emergency protocols while gaining insight into the specialized apparatus employed by firefighters during response operations.
During the session, firefighters outlined essential protocols for students to follow in the event of a fire, delineating both safe response procedures and the precise circumstances under which 911 must be dialed. The presentation further elucidated the critical necessity of contacting 911, detailing how this emergency number serves as the primary conduit linking individuals to immediate assistance.
Subsequently, members of the department guided students through an examination of the apparatus housed within their fire engine, an exercise designed to illuminate the rigorous preparation required for emergency response and the execution of their professional duties.
The excursion culminated in an inspection of the fire engine, affording students the opportunity to examine the apparatus's interior and document it through photography. This immersive experience provided them with a detailed perspective of the specialized equipment and operational workspace utilized by firefighters.
The department extended its gratitude to Hewlett Elementary School for its generous hosting of the presentation and unwavering support of the fire safety outreach initiative. Furthermore, this visit served to fortify the collaborative partnership between the department and the school district.
Founded in 1891 as a volunteer entity, the Hewlett Fire Department integrates community education and outreach into its core mandate of safeguarding residents and delivering emergency services. Consequently, school visits served as a strategic avenue to disseminate critical fire prevention knowledge to the region's younger demographic.
