Rensselaer, N.Y. — October 15 — Members of the City of Rensselaer Fire Department participated in nighttime rope rescue training, with an emphasis on incorporating drone technology into technical rescue efforts.Firefighters from the DeFreestville Fire Department also took part in the training session.
The exercise integrated conventional rope rescue techniques with the use of unmanned aerial systems. During the training, firefighters examined how drones equipped with thermal imaging cameras can help locate individuals, inspect hard-to-reach locations, and identify potential dangers before rescue teams arrive on site.
Aerial surveillance also offered incident commanders an additional means of evaluating the situation and collecting data during nighttime operations. These capabilities can aid in determining safe access paths, positioning crews, and planning rescues more effectively.
The training enabled firefighters to practice utilizing technological tools in conjunction with traditional rescue methods.
Drones can be valuable in search missions, wilderness emergencies, and technical rescues where visibility and access are limited.
The City of Rensselaer Fire Department maintains a dedicated drone team that assists other emergency agencies during critical operations. The department's overall plan includes drone operations and technical rescue abilities, such as rope rescue, as part of its specialized response capabilities.
The joint exercise with DeFreestville Fire Department created a chance for both departments to collaborate and evaluate equipment and procedures used in managing complex rescue situations.
