Onondaga Hill, N.Y. — October 6, 2026 — Tuesday afternoon, members of the Onondaga Hill Volunteer Fire Department rescued a cat stranded about 60 feet above the ground after a branch broke and left the animal in a tree.

Firefighter Golden handled the call for Truck 44 after a resident contacted the department for assistance. Two teams were formed from the crew to carry out the rescue.

One squad fashioned a salvage cover into a temporary rescue net, while the other employed the truck’s aerial device to retrieve the cat. Firefighters safely retrieved the animal with no issues.

The department stated that these calls can stop untrained residents from trying dangerous rescues on their own. A person climbing a tree or on an unsecured ladder risks injury, which could create an extra emergency for responders.
