Horseheads Firefighters Handle 30 Calls While Teaching Fire Safety

Horseheads, N.Y. — October 9, 2026 — Horseheads Fire/ Rescue Department wrapped up a busy week with its annual Fire Prevention Touch-A-Truck event while responding to 30 calls for service. 


Department members and staff used the event to connect with residents, meet families, and share fire safety information. Throughout the week, firefighters also visited three elementary schools and four pre-kindergarten programs, reaching more than 1,400 students. 


The school visits and Touch-A-Truck event gave children and families opportunities to learn about fire safety and the work performed by local emergency services. The department emphasized the importance of teaching safety practices early and helping residents recognize ways to reduce fire risks. 


Horseheads Fire/Rescue thanked the HFD Ladies Auxiliary and the participating agencies, businesses, and community organizations that helped support the event. Those acknowledged included Elmira Heights Fire Department, Erway Ambulance, Chemung County Fire/Emergency Management, the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office, Horseheads PBA, the Village of Horseheads, Dave’s Towing, Parmenter Automotive, Greenleaf Recycling, Sullivan Landscaping & Excavating, and the Amateur Radio Association of the Southern Tier.
