Owasco, N.Y. — September 24, 2026 — Firefighter trainees from across Cayuga County completed practical skills testing Thursday evening as part of New York State’s Basic Exterior Firefighting Operations ( BEFO) course hosted by the Owasco Fire Department.
The course ran twice a week over two months and introduced students to the basic skills needed to support fire suppression and other operations outside a burning structure. The training provided a foundation for firefighters beginning their service and preparing to pursue more advanced qualifications.
For the final practical session, Owasco Fire Department provided a fire engine at Station 1 on Owasco Road. Students were tested on hydrant operations and single-person ladder raises, giving them an opportunity to demonstrate key skills in a hands-on setting.
BEFO training covers exterior firefighting tasks, including water supply, hose operations, ground ladders, communications, firefighter safety and other duties performed under supervision. The New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control lists these areas among the core elements of its entry-level exterior firefighter training.
