Altoona, PA - Professional firefighters from the Altoona Fire Department wrapped up an intensive, multi-agency technical rescue certification on Friday, concluding a comprehensive three-day Trench Rescue course alongside personnel from the Altoona Water Authority.
On October 2, 2026, members of the department's A-Shift completed their final practical evolutions, sharpening specialized capabilities needed to operate safely in hazardous below-grade collapse environments. Throughout the rigorous three-day curriculum, participants tackled complex excavation safety standards, soil mechanics, pneumatic and timber shoring installation, atmospheric monitoring, and technical victim extrication procedures from unstable, deep-trench conditions.
The joint program provided an invaluable operational crossover, uniting municipal emergency rescue crews with local water utility workers who frequently operate in and around below-grade infrastructure. Training side-by-side allowed both entities to establish unified command protocols and shared rescue competencies long before a real-world subterranean collapse occurs.
IAFF Local 299 and department leadership extended their appreciation to the course instructors for their technical expertise and commended all participants from both the fire department and the Altoona Water Authority for their shared commitment to community safety and technical readiness.
