Cape May, N.J. — October 3 — Cape May firefighters commemorated the 15th anniversary of the passing of Lieutenant Andrew K.Boyt, honoring a dedicated firefighter and leader whose contributions continue to be acknowledged within the fire service.
Boyt started his firefighting journey with the Cape May Volunteer Fire Department in 1991.
He transitioned to a full-time firefighter and EMT with the City of Cape May in 1999 and was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in 2006. Throughout his career, he worked as a rescue specialist with New Jersey Task Force 1 and was a key member of the Cape May County Urban Search and Rescue Team. He also held the position of deputy emergency management coordinator for Cape May.
Boyt, who was 45 years old, passed away on October 3, 2011, after finishing his 24-hour shift. Federal records identified his death as a career firefighter fatality resulting from a cardiovascular event that occurred after his duty assignment.
New Jersey’s Department of Community Affairs also acknowledged Boyt as one of three firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty in the state during 2011.
Cape May firefighters, stationed at 712 Franklin St., continued to honor Boyt’s service, leadership, and devotion to the department, his colleagues, and the community. His legacy remains a part of the department’s history and the fire service’s continuing tradition of remembering those who have fallen.
