Engine 10 Crew Recognized for Successful Cardiac Arrest Resuscitation

Bridgeport firefighters were honored for their response during a medical emergency that started with a report of shortness of breath and escalated to cardiac arrest in 10th December 2025. 

Engine 10 arrived at the emergency scene, and firefighters promptly initiated lifesaving measures once the patient’s condition worsened. The crew carried out resuscitation efforts and successfully administered a defibrillation shock, after which the patient regained a pulse and spontaneous circulation. 

The patient was taken to Bridgeport Hospital to receive further treatment. Hospital staff later provided cardiac care in the catheterization lab, and the patient ultimately made a full recovery, according to the Bridgeport Fire Department's Sept. Two recognition announcements. 

The department and Bridgeport Hospital recognized Provisional Chief Andrew Fierlit, Pumper Engineer Geovanni Ortiz and Firefighter Elizabeth Fewell. Firefighter Jihad Whitaker was also recognized but was not pictured in the department's announcement.

The incident highlights the importance of coordinated emergency medical care from the initial 911 response through hospital treatment. Bridgeport Fire Department provides emergency medical response as part of its citywide fire and rescue operations, while Bridgeport Hospital provides emergency and cardiac care.
