Rangeley Fire Rescue Responded to Canoe Emergency

Rangeley, ME — September 7 — Rangeley Fire Rescue received a call about a water emergency near Maneskootuk Island after a canoe overturned on Rangeley Lake.The report was made around 6:16 p.m., and two people were said to be in the water, approximately 200 to 300 yards from the island, heading toward Faunce Road.

Fire Rescue sent Marine 1, Rescue 2, Engine 3, and extra personnel to handle the situation.

Crews set up operations both from the water and from the Faunce Road area, and they also called for EMS support.

Before the fire-rescue teams arrived, a nearby civilian took action by using a personal watercraft upon learning about the emergency.

This person located one of the individuals in the water and brought them onto their boat.Both people were eventually safely brought to shore.

One of the individuals was checked by EMS and later taken to a hospital for further assessment.

Rangeley Fire Rescue has been involved in several water-related incidents on Rangeley Lake, such as a rescue in July 2026 when a paddleboarder became stranded due to sudden increases in wind and wave activity.
