Portland Firefighters Completed Three-Day Water Rescue Course

Portland, ME — September 2 — Twelve members of the Portland Maine Fire Department successfully completed the department's in-house Surface Rescue Swimmer Course after three days of training focused on water rescue operations.

The 24-hour course included a mix of classroom instruction, pool-based confidence-building exercises, and open-ocean scenarios.

The training covered techniques that enable firefighters to safely reach and assist people in water emergencies while also ensuring the safety of the rescuers during operations.

Participants practiced life-saving techniques, rope and knot applications, deploying swimmers from both land and water, and methods for assisting individuals in difficult water conditions.

The course followed practices in line with NFPA standards and the guidelines of the Portland Fire Department.

The training gave firefighters hands-on experience in situations that require quick decisions, coordinated efforts, and the correct use of rescue equipment.

The department's specialty resources include a Dive Team, which enhances the city's emergency response for water-related incidents.
