25 Years Later, Fire Service Remembers September 11

On Friday, firefighters and others in the emergency-services community came together with people nationwide to observe the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks, honoring the first responders, civilians and families touched by that day's events.
The remembrance message that Jefferson Township Fire Company No. 2 shared emphasized the loss of 343 FDNY firefighters, 37 Port Authority Police Department officers and 23 NYPD officers, as well as thousands of civilians.
As stated by the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, 441 first responders from more than 30 agencies lost their lives on September 11, 2001. That figure comprises 343 FDNY firefighters, 37 PAPD officers, 23 NYPD officers and 38 personnel from other agencies.
The initial emergency operation at the World Trade Center brought in roughly 2,000 police officers, close to 1,000 firefighters and over 100 ambulances. Personnel from FDNY, NYPD, PAPD and other agencies moved into the area to evacuate civilians, rescue victims and deliver medical aid.
