Somerville Firefighters Marked 25 Years Since September 11

Somerville, N.J. — September 11 — The Somerville Fire Department honored the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, by paying tribute to those who lost their lives and acknowledging the firefighters, emergency personnel, and others who took part in responding to the attacks and their aftermath.
The 9/11 Memorial & Museum celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2026 with a commemorative ceremony.
Family members read the names of the 2,983 individuals who died in the 2001 attacks as well as the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.The event also included a new moment of silence to honor those who later passed away due to health issues or injuries related to 9/11.
The anniversary was closely tied to Somerville’s fire service.
Historical records show that members of the Somerville Fire Department were involved in rescue and recovery efforts in New York during the weeks after the attacks.
Based at 85 North Gaston Ave., the department has been serving Somerville since 1835.
Its volunteer firefighters offer fire suppression, hazardous materials response, and rescue services, handling over 650 fire incidents each year.
The 25th anniversary offered the emergency services community a chance to remember those who were lost, recognize the long-term impacts on responders, and ensure the lessons of September 11 are preserved for future firefighters.
