Somerville Firefighters Observed Labor Day

Somerville, N.J. — September 7 — The Somerville Fire Department celebrated Labor Day by honoring the efforts, commitment, and contributions of workers throughout the community, including firefighters and other emergency service professionals.

For those in fire and emergency medical services, Labor Day also served as a reminder of the work that happens before and after emergency calls.

Training, equipment maintenance, station duties, inspections, and ensuring readiness were all essential parts of their responsibilities.

The Somerville Fire Department has been serving the borough since 1835 and continues to function as a volunteer-based department.

Based at 85 North Gaston Ave., the department offers fire suppression, hazardous materials response, and rescue services.

The department operates several fire engines and ladder trucks.

Its fleet includes Engine 57-1, a 2025 E-ONE Typhoon pumper, as well as ladder and rescue equipment used during emergency situations.

Somerville’s fire service has a long history of volunteer involvement.

The earliest recorded fire company was established in 1835, and Engine Company No.1 was formed in 1878.

Labor Day offered an opportunity to acknowledge the ongoing efforts that keep emergency services operational and communities supported throughout the year.
