Raritan Fire Department Observed Labor Day With a Focus on Service

Raritan, N.J. — September 7 — The Raritan Borough Fire Department honored Labor Day by acknowledging the efforts of firefighters, emergency service personnel, and other community workers who contributed throughout the year.

Headquartered at 611 N.

Thompson St., the Raritan Fire Department functioned as a fully volunteer fire company, offering fire protection to the borough.The department stated that its key responsibilities involved fire suppression, vehicle extraction, and public safety operations.It covered an area of approximately two square miles, encompassing residential, commercial, industrial, and community buildings, as well as highways, railroad facilities, the river, and the canal.

The department's origins trace back to 1847, when local residents formed a fire protection group following a significant fire in the borough.

The group eventually became Relief Hose Company No.2 and continued to serve Raritan, adapting to changes in equipment, training, and emergency response requirements.

Raritan Borough officially recognized Relief Hose Company No.

2 as its fire protection agency.The company operated its headquarters on North Thompson Street and collaborated with borough resources to deliver fire protection services.

For emergency service workers, Labor Day offered a chance to appreciate the training, equipment maintenance, station duties, and readiness that supported fire protection all year.

The holiday also celebrated the volunteers who managed to fulfill their emergency service commitments while juggling their everyday jobs and family responsibilities.
