Three New Brunswick Firefighters Receive Promotions

Three New Brunswick Fire Department members were promoted to new leadership roles during a ceremony at City Hall recognizing their years of service to the city.

Family members, friends and fellow firefighters attended the ceremony, which was presided over by Mayor Jim Cahill and Fire Director Chris Stellatella.

Michael Pilch was promoted to deputy chief. Pilch joined the New Brunswick Fire Department in 2006, according to information released by the city.

Oneill Martinez, who joined the department in 2014, was promoted to captain. Martinez is also the grandson of Epifanio “Freddie” Colon, who served from 1965 to 1991 and was New Brunswick’s first Hispanic firefighter.

Jorge L. Otero Jr. was promoted to lieutenant. Otero joined the New Brunswick Fire Department in 2013 and has served the city as a firefighter.

The promotions add three experienced officers to the department’s leadership ranks as they take on greater responsibilities within the New Brunswick Fire Department.

Cahill said the promotions recognize the firefighters’ dedication to their profession and reflect the trust, accountability and leadership that come with their new positions.

The New Brunswick Fire Department operates out of three firehouses and provides career fire and rescue services throughout the city. The department protects a diverse mix of residential neighborhoods, high-rise buildings, medical facilities, educational institutions and commercial properties.
