Mastering the Stretch: Wyckoff Volunteers Drill on Extended Hoseline Tactics and Deployment Pitfalls

WYCKOFF, NJ — Firefighters focused on precision, distance, and real-world problem-solving during a hands-on tactical training evolution focused on complex hose evolutions.

During the evening drill on August 24, members of the Wyckoff Volunteer Fire Department assembled in Bergen County to sharpen their deployment techniques for extended hose lays coupled with attack lines. Responders reviewed the critical tactical necessity of extended lays, which allow crews to reach deep property setbacks, multi-unit complexes, and structures situated far from accessible roadways or driveways.

Firefighters ran through proper pulling, flaking, and advancing mechanics to guarantee rapid water on the fire under challenging conditions. To reinforce operational awareness, instructors also demonstrated what happens when lines deploy incorrectly, giving members a firsthand look at common friction points, kinks, and deploymnt snags—and how to rapidly troubleshoot them on a high-stress fireground.
