Gary Thurston’s Helmet Returns to Randolph Fire Department

August 20, 2026 — Randolph, Vermont: Gary Thurston, a fireman who lost his life while trying to rescue a life in February 1973, is being remembered by the Randolph Village Fire Department.

Thurston's helmet was given to the department by his family this year. Members determined that the helmet would be a lasting reminder of Thurston's position in the department after debating the best way to remember him.

The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation also honors Thurston's name, listing him as a 1973 line-of-duty fatality from the Randolph Fire Department.

According to the agency, Thurston's sacrifice and dedication to the Randolph community will always be honored. The Randolph Village Fire Department serves Randolph Village and also provides contracted fire protection to Braintree and East Granville
