WATERVILLE, ME — September 7 — Waterville Fire-Rescue acknowledged the workers and public-service professionals who contributed to supporting the community and the nation on Labor Day, which was celebrated on September 7.

The department’s message honored healthcare workers, educators, public works employees, tradespeople, first responders, and others whose efforts are essential to the daily functioning of the community.

It also thanked emergency service personnel for continuing to provide coverage while many residents took time off to celebrate the holiday.

Labor Day has been observed on the first Monday of September as a national holiday since Congress officially established it in 1894.

According to the U.S.Department of Labor, the holiday was created to honor the social and economic contributions made by American workers.

For fire and emergency medical services personnel, the holiday also highlighted the work of crews who maintained emergency coverage while communities observed the day.

Waterville Fire-Rescue provided fire suppression, rescue, hazardous materials response, and emergency medical services from its station located at 7 College Avenue.

The Labor Day message also recognized the ongoing efforts of those who help ensure that Waterville and surrounding communities remain safe and functioning smoothly.
