WATERVILLE, ME — September 2 — Waterville Fire-Rescue C-Shift personnel responded to the Two Cent Bridge to help after a puppy became trapped in a narrow section of the historic pedestrian bridge.

The young dog had been walking with its owner on the bridge before getting its head stuck in a confined space and being unable to free itself.

Firefighters carefully assessed the situation and worked to rescue the puppy without causing additional harm.The crew successfully rescued the dog, which was then reunited with its owner and continued its outing.

The Two Cent Bridge spans the Kennebec River between Waterville and Winslow.

The pedestrian bridge was originally constructed in 1901 and was rebuilt after flooding damaged the original structure in 1902.The replacement was completed in 1903 and has since remained an important part of the local history.

This response showed how fire-rescue crews handle calls involving animals as well as traditional fire and rescue situations.
