POWNAL, VT — August 31 — Members of the Pownal Fire Department carried out vehicle extrication training on Monday night, participating in an exercise with newer firefighters.

The training involved using a vehicle to allow all members to practice the steps required during an extrication operation.

During the exercise, crews worked around the vehicle, reviewing safe work zones, access points, tool usage, and coordination necessary for a rescue.

This session aligns with the department’s ongoing focus on training and ensuring equipment is ready for use.

The Pownal Fire Department’s annual report highlighted training as a key priority, noting past instruction in vehicle extrication and rescue procedures.It also mentioned that members regularly train on Monday nights.

To perform vehicle extrication, crews had to follow a controlled sequence while taking into account the vehicle’s stability, patient access, and the safety of the responders.

The Vermont Fire Academy has placed a strong emphasis on hands-on training in vehicle stabilization and extrication techniques within its rescue programs.This session provided newer firefighters with valuable hands-on experience prior to responding to a real motor vehicle emergency.
