Westport, CT - Westport firefighters recently completed their quarterly Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) training, taking on challenging conditions designed to simulate the demanding environments crews may encounter during real emergency responses.

The training required firefighters to work in full protective gear while operating in low-visibility and confined conditions. These exercises are designed to help crews remain calm, coordinated and effective when visibility is limited and conditions become hazardous.

On August 24, firefighters practiced several essential skills, including air management, hoseline advancement, confined-space navigation, and firefighter rescue and removal techniques. Each exercise focused on building familiarity with equipment and strengthening communication and teamwork among crew members.

SCBA training is an important part of firefighter preparedness because crews may need to operate in smoke-filled buildings or other environments where breathable air is limited. Managing their air supply while advancng hoselines and navigating unfamilar spaces can be critical to both firefighter safety and successful rescue operations.

The hands-on quarterly training gives Westport firefighters an opportunity to reinforce these skills and prepare for the physical and operational challenges they may face while responding to structure fires and other hazardous incidents.
