Bethel, CT - Fast action by a commercial vehicle driver and rapid suppression operations by local emergency units prevented a potential explosion after a utility truck loaded with tools and combustible equipment caught fire Monday afternoon.
The blaze broke out at approximately 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, dispatching the Bethel Fire Department to the intersection of Reservoir Street and Bethpage Road for a fully involved commercial vehicle fire.
Prior to the arrival of first responders, the alert driver acted swiftly to dismount and remove pressurized oxyacetylene tanks from the burning truck bed, averting a severe explosion hazard in the middle of the intersection.
Bethel’s Engine 6 arrived quickly and initiated an aggressive handline attack to knock down the flames consuming the vehicle's cargo area. Bethel FD’s Car 1 (Fire Chief), Tanker 1, and Squad 5 operated on scene alongside Stony Hill Fire Department's Engine 1, while Ambulance 2 stood by for responder safety and fire police managed traffic detours around the active fireground.
With the flames extinguished, crews turned their attention to environmental containment across the Fairfield County intersection. Responders deployed absorbent booms and barriers to halt vehicle fluids from contaminating nearby municipal storm drains.
The local fire marshal conducted an on-scene investigation, and a Bethel Public Works sand truck applied treatment materials to slick roadways, allowing travel lanes to reopen safely once the wreckage was towed.
