On the Line at Height: Tech Rescue Teams Sharpen Rope Skills in Chester Training Evolution

Windsor, VT - Proctorsville Volunteer Fire Department’s Technical Rescue personnel recently joined forces with the Chester Fire Department Technical Rescue team for a focused high-angle rope rescue training evolution conducted along Route 35 in Chester.
The drill brought together rope-certified members to practice a range of critical skills used in steep and elevated rescue environments, including rope system construction, controlled rappelling, edge transitions, and patient lowering utilizing a twin-tension rope system designed for maximum safety and redundancy.
The training, conducted on 26 August in Windsor County, emphasized the complexity and inherent risk associated with high-angle rescues, where precision and coordination are esential for both rescuer and patient safety. Crews rotated through operational roles to strengthen familiarity with system setup and smooth execution under simulated field conditions.
Members also practiced raising systems and controlled lowering techniques, simulating scenarios where both patients and rescuers may need to be moved vertically in challenging terrain or structural environments.
Given the low-frequency but high-risk nature of rope rescue incidents, the evolution focused heavily on maintaining proficiency, reinforcing comunication, and ensuring seamless interoperability between responding agencies.
The joint training highlighted the importance of continuous skill development and inter-departmental coperation, ensuring that when real-world high-angle emergencies occur, teams are prepared to respond with confidence, precision, and coordinated efficiency.
