Sheldon, VT - Sheldon Fire Department firefighters conducted hands-on training focused on realistic window operations and upper-floor search techniques, using a custom-built prop designed from sheetrock to simulate residential window conditions.

The evolution emphasized firefighter survival and interior search skills, where members first practiced gaining entry through the simulated window using hand tools before systematically sounding the floor to confirm structural stability prior to committing inside the structure.

The training, conducted on 30 August in Franklin County, focused heavily on Vent-Enter-Search (VES) procedures under controlled but realistic conditions, reinforcing decision-making during limited visibility and rapidly changing interior environments.

In addition to search operations, firefighters were introduced to a rapid emergency exit technique known as “Hook 2 Grab 4,” designed to assist members in quickly exiting through a window frame when interior conditions deteriorate, ensuring a low-profile and controlled escape from upper floors.

The drill reinforced core principles of aggressive but safe interior operations, with emphasis on risk assessment, floor integrity checks, and rapid egress skills essential for firefighter survival in high-risk environments.
