AMHERST, NY — August 13 — North Amherst Fire Company held its third annual hose line hockey drill on August 13, 2026, in collaboration with members of Wendelville Fire Company.The event combined practical firefighter training with a competitive yet friendly environment.

The drill followed a format similar to waterball, with two teams competing against each other. Each team used charged hose lines to move a large hockey puck toward the opponent’s goal.

While the exercise provided a refreshing break from regular training and more demanding fireground scenarios, it also offered firefighters a chance to practice working with hose lines in a controlled environment.

Participants focused on controlling nozzles, advancing hoses, and working effectively as a team, all while managing resistance.

The drill also emphasized the importance of communication and coordination among firefighters when handling hoselines, which are essential skills during structural fire operations.

North Amherst Fire Company is based at 2200 Tonawanda Creek Road in Amherst. The Town of Amherst stated that fire departments in the area regularly conduct training sessions and community events.

This event was the third annual hose line hockey drill organized by North Amherst Fire Company, with Wendelville Fire Company participating. No emergency response was involved during the exercise.

The training showed that firefighter drills can be both practical and enjoyable, allowing crews from neighboring departments to collaborate in a more relaxed setting.
