Killington, VT - Killington Fire & Rescue Services B Shift members took a creative approach to training this week, turning a routine drill into a competitive and engaging SCBA-based fitness evolution.

On 25 August, crews participated in a modified game of pickleball while wearing full structural firefighting gear and operating on SCBA. The evolution was designed to push physical conditioning while reinforcing key firefighter skills including air management, controlled breathing, endurance, and coordination under added weight and restriction.

Despite the demanding conditions of operating in full PPE, members adapted quickly, focusing on maintaining composure, conserving air, and staying effective while performing quick movements and reactions during play. The added challenge of gear weight—often reaching significant physical load—made even simple movements more demanding, simulating real-world fireground stress in a controlled and engaging environment.

To add variety, some members also participated in a light game of catch, further emphasizing coordination and movement control while operating under breathing apparatus conditions.

The training highlighted the department’s focus on building physical readiness, teamwork, and operational discipline while keeping morale high and maintaining an enjoyable training atmosphere for all participants.
