An FDNY battalion chief provided emergency medical care to an unresponsive man while playing golf at the Lawrence Yacht and Country Club on Long Island.

FDNY Battalion Chief Greg Jackman, a 25-year veteran of the department, noticed the medical emergency and immediately went to assist. Jackman joined another individual who was already helping the patient.

The man was unresponsive and not breathing. Jackman began chest compressions while CPR was performed, and an automated external defibrillator (AED) was brought to the scene.

Local EMS personnel soon arrived and continued patient care. The patient was transported to a hospital and was expected to recover, according to the FDNY account. Later, Village of Lawrence Mayor Samuel Nahmias acknowledged Jackman and the person who helped him. Nahmias is the current mayor, according to the Village of Lawrence.

The event emphasizes the need of performing CPR right away and getting an AED before emergency medical services arrive. The answer also shows how firemen and other emergency service workers may use their skills outside of their regular jobs during emergencies.
