Putnam Valley, NY - Volunteer firefighters from the Putnam Valley Fire Department extinguished a fully involved vehicle fire early Thursday morning after a car left the roadway, crashed into a roadside ditch, and ignited.

At approximately 1:20 a.m. on Thursday, September 24, 2026, Putnam Valley emergency personnel were dispatched to Canopus Hollow Road for reports of a vehicle fire following a single-car accident. First-arriving units encountered the vehicle off the roadway in a drainage ditch with active flames consuming the carriage and compartment.

The driver managed to safely self-extricate from the vehicle before fire consumed the interior and confirmed to emergency dispatchers that no medical attention or hospitalization was required.

Responding engine crews stretched a suppression handline, rapidly knocking down the vehicle fire and dousing surrounding brush to prevent flames from extending into nearby roadside vegetation. Responders completed fluid hazard mitigation and stood by until commercial towing equipment cleared the burned vehicle from the ditch line.
