Orland, ME - In rural communities where municipal fire hydrants are nonexistent, the success of structural fire suppression hinges entirely on a seamless, uninterrupted water shuttle. Moving thousands of gallons across remote stretches requires well-oiled team coordination, precise positioning, and an intimate understanding of how every piece of aging apparatus performs under real-world pressure.

To hone these fundamental rural tactics, members of the Orland Fire Department gathered for a detailed training evolution on the evening of August 12, 2026, in Hancock County. Led by Lieutenant Stackpole, the session focused specifically on mapping out the working capacities, pump mechanics, and physical limitations of the department’s 32-year-old frontline workhorse, Tanker 551.

Firefighters kicked off the evolutions by practicing the rapid deployment and stabilization of a portable drop tank—an essential temporary pool used to store water on the fireground. Crews drilled on positioning Tanker 551 to execute high-volume dumps, cycling through both the side and rear discharge chutes to observe flow rates, angles, and turnaround speed.

To maximize operational practice and conserve water throughout the drill, Engine 511 staged alongside the portable pool, establishing a draft using hard-suction hose to pull the dumped water back out and cycle it efficiently.

Once the initial deployment cycles were completed, the team moved the operation out to a live drafting site at Toddy Pond. Staging Rescue 581 at the pond's edge, firefighters established a static water supply to draft directly from the pond and pump water to top off Tanker 551’s tank to full capacity.
